Find your freedom in
the outdoors
Adventures don’t have to be big – just fitting in a few regular walks gives me the nature fix I need and reduces stress. I feel lighter in my heart, fitter in my body and more in tune with the world. It’s an integral part of maintaining my wellbeing.

The simplicity of hiking
Hiking is one of the simplest and most beautiful ways to experience nature. We don’t need expensive equipment or any special knowledge, all we need are a pair of comfy shoes and the desire to get outside – it’s a great all-round exercise that anyone can do.
Hiking is more than just moving in nature though, it’s a way to let your soul be free, clear your head and recharge your batteries. With every step we take on a walk or hiking trail, we immerse ourselves deeper in nature. We experience the landscape with all our senses, breathe in the fresh air and feel the sun on our skin. Hiking is a journey to ourselves, a way to find our inner centre. Being outside and spending time in nature has many benefits for mental well-being.
Walking outside is what humans are built to do. Most of our history on Earth has been spent as hunter-gatherers, and it is only in recent history that we have big urban areas, day jobs, and an increase in sedentary lifestyles. It makes sense that hiking outdoors makes us feel great!
The act of walking outside can be meditative, helping us to focus on the present moment. This may help to relieve symptoms of stress and anxiety, as it provides relief from pressures of work and other problems in life. When you are outside walking in a natural environment, it makes you aware that the world is about much more than the bubble we live in at work and home.
Build and strengthen friendships
Hiking can be a way of finding solitude when you need it, however it’s also a great social activity. When you go hiking with friends, you spend a lot of time together without the distractions of modern life – a great opportunity to talk while you walk!
Being able to open up and talk freely helps us to strengthen the bonds of friendship or can help you get to know each other more closely, sharing experiences which you will always remember.
Hiking as a social activity can be really beneficial for people who struggle with loneliness. Feeling alone has a negative effect on mental and physical health, but joining hikes and walks with Maverick Mums can be a great way to make new friends and increase your support network.
Whether you’re new to hiking and would like to experience the health benefits for yourself, or you’re a seasoned walker looking for your next big adventure, we offer free social hikes (sometimes to catch the sunrise), mountain climbs, multi-activity adventures and navigation courses to teach the basics of map reading and route planning so you can get out on your own or take friends and family with you.
Walking is the most perfect form of motion for a person who wants to discover the true life.
